Coffee Row Chronicles: “Burgers, Gophers, and a Valentine’s Return” — Weekly Edition

The only thing hotter than the grill at the rink this week is the debate at the Round Table.
The smell of fresh coffee drifted through the Gull Lake Diner as Earl, the town’s resident agent of chaos, tapped his phone like he was breaking national news.
“Number one seed,” he announced. “Twenty‑four percent of the vote. I always said our rink burgers could win a provincial title.”
Hank, the retired farmer who never sat anywhere but his usual chair, nodded. “Fresh beef, shredded cheddar, volunteers who know what they’re doing—hard to beat.”
Edna, the watchdog with her For Posterity notebook, made a quick note. “Quality and consistency. Two things this town still understands.”
Rita, ever the optimist, breezed in with a tray of muffins sprinkled with cheddar. “Celebration muffins! For our burger victory.”
Edna eyed them. “Rita, you realize cheese muffins don’t influence voting.”
Rita shrugged. “They influence morale.”
A snowy gust followed the Postmaster through the door as he stepped inside, brushing off his coat.
“Speaking of morale,” he said, warming his hands around a mug, “Ottawa turned down the emergency strychnine request. Gopher numbers are exploding again.”
The table fell quiet—not out of surprise, but recognition. Everyone knew someone whose fields had suffered last summer.
Hank exhaled slowly. “Fields looked shelled. And this year’s shaping up worse.”
Earl leaned back. “Pages of federal paperwork don’t fill gopher holes.”
Mabel, the Diner’s owner and the heart of the table, refilled cups with a steady hand. “Don Connick told the reporter he’s not a fan of poisons either. Just wants something that works. That’s what everyone wants—balance.”
Rita set down another plate. “Gopher‑hole muffins. For… solidarity?”
Edna stared. “Rita, those look like the problem.”
Before anyone could respond, the door chimed again. This time the Postmaster returned with a printed menu, still crisp from the Hitching Post.
“Picked this up on my way back,” he said. “Ryan LeFaive’s cooking again. Launching his catering business with a Valentine’s Supper.”
Rita lit up instantly. “I knew he couldn’t stay retired. His cooking is practically a love language.”
Hank smiled. “Lily’s Kitchen… now that was a place. Honest food. No shortcuts.”
Earl squinted at the menu. “If he brings back anything close to that mushroom cream sauce, they’ll need traffic control on Highway 1.”
Mabel rested a hand on the table. “It’s good for the town. Hospitality is part of our heritage. And Ryan’s always understood that.”
Edna closed her notebook. “Three stories, one theme: community. Whether it’s burgers, fields, or supper at the Hitching Post—people here show up for each other.”
Rita nodded. “It feels like Gull Lake is… humming. Like everything’s moving.”
Hank added, “Some things are hard. Some things are hopeful. But it’s all part of the same week.”
A familiar rhythm of footsteps crossed the floor as Binder, the steady bridge between town and council, arrived exactly seven minutes late. He hung his coat and joined the circle.
“Every headline this week points to the same thing,” he said. “Resilience, pride, and people who care. That’s the real story of Gull Lake.”
Earl raised a muffin. “And if the Holy Honker, a gopher‑hole muffin, and a Valentine’s menu don’t prove we’re adaptable, nothing will.”
