Tompkins, Saskatchewan, sits along Highway 1 between Gull Lake and Maple Creek, one of the southwest’s small but steady communities that reflects the quiet resilience this region is known for. With its community hall, rink, post office, school, and library, the village continues to hold its place on the map. Much of this is made possible by the volunteers who support local clubs, facilities, and community programs.

Tompkins School is a central part of community life. As a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school with small class sizes and a close‑knit learning environment, it plays a steady role in supporting young families and hosting activities throughout the year. By participating in community events, the school enriches village life and helps strengthen local connections.

The village also features a variety of local businesses and clubs and promotes affordable living and development opportunities as part of its community profile. Its location on Highway 1 brings regular traffic through the area, supporting local services and amenities.

Tompkins is home to the John Woodward Campground, named in honour of John Woodward — a former mayor, long‑time business owner, and long‑time resident of the community. The campground remains a familiar overnight stop for travelers moving through the region. One of the village’s most recognizable landmarks is its sod hut, a heritage feature that nods to the early homesteaders who built their first prairie homes from the land itself.

Named for Thomas Tompkins, a CPR railroad contractor, the village began as a classic rail stop along the mainline. Tompkins is also known as the home of Gus Wickstrom, the well‑known pig spleen weather forecaster whose Prairie folk predictions drew national and international attention. While the community has changed over the years, the sense of connection remains the same — carried forward by the people who continue to give their time to local organizations and community life.

Whether you’re passing through or stopping in for a local event, Tompkins is a testament to the quiet resilience and enduring strength found in small places across the southwest.
