RCMP Warns of Sharp Increase in Fatal Collisions Across Saskatchewan — Maple Creek Among Hardest Hit

The Saskatchewan RCMP has issued a province‑wide warning after a sharp rise in fatal motor vehicle collisions, including several in the Southwest region.
Between July 10 and 21, RCMP officers responded to 12 fatal collisions resulting in 17 deaths across Saskatchewan. The detachment areas most affected include:
Maple Creek: 3 fatalities
Swift Current Rural/Morse: 1 fatality
Both areas are part of the highway network used daily by Gull Lake residents.
Half of the collisions during this period involved alcohol and/or drugs as a contributing factor.
A Concerning Trend This Summer
Inspector Lee Knelsen of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services reports a significant increase in both fatal collisions and impairment‑related crashes.
From June 1 to July 22, RCMP responded to:
23 fatal collisions
27 deaths
77% increase in fatal collisions compared to last year
108% increase in lives lost compared to last year
Impairment is also rising
2025 (first six months): 35% of fatal collisions involved alcohol/drugs
2026 (first six months): 52% involved alcohol/drugs
Impairment-related fatalities have risen sharply—from 35% in early 2025 to 52% in early 2026.
RCMP’s Message to the Public
In the RCMP’s media briefing, Inspector Knelsen stated: “These are not just numbers. They represent lives lost, and these numbers are increasing.”
