Gull Lake Grills the Competition in Rink Burger Showdown

In a huge show of community support, Gull Lake has surged to the top of the leaderboard in the race for the 2024 Rink Burger crown. According to reporting by David Zammit at Swift Current Online, Gull Lake captured nearly 24% of all votes in the opening round—a commanding early lead that secured them the #1 seed.

Local sportscasters Shawn Mullin and Andrew McCormack even made a “scouting trip” to the Gull Lake rink during Sunday’s Greyhounds game to see if the burgers lived up to the hype. Their verdict? The variety and quality more than justify the buzz.

The Secret Sauce: What’s Under the Bun?

So what makes the Gull Lake concession such a powerhouse? A recent Swift Current Online video segment offered a closer look, revealing the local ingredients behind their hometown advantage:

  • Freshness First: Cook Rachel Harvey confirmed that the beef is ground daily—it’s never frozen.

  • Local Roots: Much of the beef is donated by area farmers, a true reflection of the community spirit that keeps the rink running.

  • The Melt Factor: Instead of standard processed slices, Gull Lake uses freshly shredded cheddar, giving each burger a superior melt on the grill.

  • Legendary Options: From the massive "Holy Honker" (three patties squished into two!) to the house-made Bacon Jam Burger, the menu goes way beyond standard rink fare.

Who Else Made the Great Eight?

While Gull Lake leads the pack, seven other communities have earned their spot in the quarterfinals. The "Great Eight" moving forward are:

  • Glentworth — A strong second with nearly 20% of the opening vote.

  • Cabri & Kyle—Familiar faces from last year’s finals and semifinals.

  • Simmie—The defending inaugural champions, still very much in the hunt.

  • Ponteix, Gravelbourg, and Herbert—Rounding out the remaining top survivors.

Tough Breaks for Local Favorites

Not every favorite advanced. Last year’s semifinalist Maple Creek narrowly missed the cut, while Tompkins, Eastend, Rush Lake, and Shaunavon also bowed out. In a competition this tight, it’s clear that every single vote truly matters.

Your Turn to Vote!

The quarterfinals are officially open as of today. Whether you want to keep Gull Lake’s momentum rolling or you’re cheering for an underdog to pull off an upset, it’s time to have your say.

Voting for this round closes February 9 at 11:59 p.m.
