Further Shores: A New Look at 1970s Gull Lake Comes to Swift Current

A New Exhibition Rooted in Gull Lake’s Past
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to take artist Steacy Easton through the Gull Lake Museum. That visit now connects directly to a major new exhibition opening in Swift Current.
The Art Gallery of Swift Current is launching Further Shores, a project inspired by Stephen Shore’s 1970s photographs of Gull Lake. Shore—a legendary American photographer known for pioneering colour documentary work—captured everyday prairie life with a clarity that still resonates today.
For our community, those images are more than art history; they’re snapshots of home.
Further Shores builds on that foundation, blending Steacy’s original work with found images to explore how rural places shape memory and meaning. It’s contemporary art grounded in small‑town history, offering a fresh perspective on Gull Lake’s place in the wider cultural landscape.
Local Conversation: Happening Right Here in Gull Lake
A public conversation with Steacy Easton will take place:
📍 Yellow Canary Books & Stationery 🕖 Wednesday, August 19 at 7 p.m.
This is a rare chance for residents to hear directly from the artist about the project, the inspiration behind it, and the significance of Stephen Shore’s work in our community.
Exhibition Details
📍 Art Gallery of Swift Current
🎉 Public Reception: Friday, August 21, 7–9 p.m.
🗓 Exhibition Runs Until: October 31
If you’re interested in photography, rural culture, or the way art helps us see our own community in new ways, this exhibition is worth the trip.
It’s not often that Gull Lake’s story becomes the centrepiece of a provincial gallery—and it’s meaningful to see our town reflected through both past and present eyes.
Why It Matters
Gull Lake has always had a way of showing up in unexpected places—in history books, in provincial conversations, and now in contemporary art.
Further Shores is another reminder that our community’s story resonates far beyond our borders.
Mark your calendar and take in this unique chance to see Gull Lake through an artist’s lens.
