In Gull Lake, the doctors who served across more than a century left a legacy of leadership, endurance, and community commitment that defined every era of local healthcare. From the town’s first medical man to the physician who leads today, their work forms a continuous line through Gull Lake’s history.
The Hospital Era (1906–1993)
Dr. Code (1906–1909)
Gull Lake’s medical story begins with Dr. Code, the town’s first physician. Working from a modest residence near what is now the old drug store building, he provided care in conditions that were basic and often improvised. His practice ended with his death from tuberculosis in 1909, but he established the foundation of organized medical care in the community.
Dr. J.P. McCue (1910–1936)
Arriving in 1910, Dr. McCue became the defining medical figure of early Gull Lake. His name appears throughout the historical minutes, tied to surgeries, emergencies, and the realities of rural medicine when nurses performed their own X‑ray and lab work. His 26 years of service gave the hospital stability during decades when many rural facilities struggled to survive.
Dr. John Matheson (1931–1956)
Dr. Matheson arrived in 1931 and guided the hospital through the Depression, wartime shortages, and the post‑war boom. His name appears repeatedly in the minutes as the community worked to keep the facility funded and staffed. His 25‑year tenure helped the hospital endure its most challenging financial years.
Following Dr. Matheson’s departure in 1956, Gull Lake was served by short‑term and regional physicians until Dr. Ko’s arrival in 1967.
Dr. H.Y. Ko (1967–1993)
In 1967, Dr. Ko was appointed Chief of Staff and became the central medical figure of the modern hospital era. His leadership coincided with major changes: regional hospital councils, unionization, new equipment, renovations, and evolving healthcare standards. He was the last resident physician of Gull Lake’s hospital era, serving through the final decades before provincial restructuring.
The Transition: Saskatchewan’s 1993 Restructuring
In 1993, Saskatchewan restructured rural healthcare. Many small hospitals—including Gull Lake's—were officially closed and converted into Health Centres.
Key changes included:

emergency stabilization
community health programming
Gull Lake’s Health Centre did not include long‑term care beds.
Dr. Ko continued practising for several years after the transition, providing stability during a period of major change.
The Health Centre Era (1997–Present)
Dr. Clare Kozroski (1997–Present)
A new chapter began in 1997, when Dr. Clare Kozroski moved to southwest Saskatchewan after marrying her husband, Gordon. Her arrival brought long‑term stability at a time when many rural communities were losing physicians. She quickly became the defining figure of Gull Lake’s modern medical story, ensuring residents continued to have reliable, accessible care close to home. Her work at the Health Centre has been central to maintaining accessible, reliable medical care for the community.
She also served as President of the Saskatchewan Medical Association, elevating Gull Lake’s voice at the provincial level and becoming one of Saskatchewan’s most influential rural physicians.
In recent years, Dr. Jason Gatzke has also provided medical care in Gull Lake while practising in Swift Current, supporting the community alongside Dr. Kozroski.
A Legacy Built Across Generations
From Dr. Code to Dr. McCue, Dr. Matheson, Dr. Ko, and Dr. Kozroski, each era of medical leadership shaped Gull Lake’s healthcare story—founding, stabilizing, enduring, modernizing, and continuing. Their work defined the character of Gull Lake’s hospital and health centre across more than a century.
The story of healthcare in Gull Lake cannot be told without them. They were the steady hands, the familiar faces, and the leaders who carried the community through its greatest challenges and its proudest moments.
