When people think about the builders of early Gull Lake, they often picture merchants, farmers, and town founders. But some community builders wore several hats. One was Joe Ohlheiser, an early businessman, musician and settler whose contributions extended far beyond his butcher shop.

Early Business Roots

Joe Ohlheiser was among Gull Lake's earliest business owners. By 1907 he owned a meat market and served residents during the community's formative years. At a time when nearly every necessity was supplied locally, businesses like his played an important role in supporting daily life in the young town. Records show his shop was operating by 1907 and later listed as the Sanitary Meat Market.

More Than a Butcher

But Ohlheiser’s role in the community extended beyond business.

Long before radio brought entertainment into people’s homes, Saturday night dances were among the highlights of social life in many prairie communities. Local recollections remember lively square dances held on the upper floor of Morrow’s Furniture Store, with music provided by Joe Ohlheiser and his fellow fiddlers. Their music helped bring neighbours together and added to the sense of community that was taking shape in Gull Lake’s early years.

Ohlheiser was also among the area’s early settlers. Around 1908 or 1909, he joined Allie Thomas, Ebby Thomas, and others in acquiring land east of the cemetery toward what is now Highway 37. Each took a portion to prove up as a homestead, building small homes and establishing themselves in the growing district.

These stories remind us that building a community is about more than running a business. It is also about creating opportunities for neighbours to gather, helping families put down roots, and contributing to the social life of a young town.

More than a century later, Joe Ohlheiser remains part of Gull Lake’s recorded history not only because he operated one of its early businesses, but because he helped shape everyday community life. Whether serving customers, playing fiddle music at a Saturday night dance, or helping settle the land around the town, he contributed to the foundations of the Gull Lake we know today.

People Who Built Gull Lake is an ongoing series recognizing the individuals whose work, entrepreneurship, and community involvement helped shape the history of Gull Lake.
