Homesteaders travelling south from Gull Lake in the early settlement era. The arrival of new settlers helped shape the community William Green worked to develop in the early 1900s.

Every town has people whose names quietly shaped its future. In Gull Lake's early years, few played a more important role in that process than William Green.

An American from Fort Benton, Montana, Green served as the land agent for Conrad and Price, the men who purchased the former "76" Ranch holdings and laid out the present townsite in 1905. As settlers arrived in growing numbers, Green was at the center of the effort to help turn ranch land into an organized community.

His influence extended beyond selling lots. In the fall of 1906, William Green worked with Scotty Birnie to lay out the Gull Lake Cemetery, helping establish a permanent resting place for the town's pioneers and future generations.

Green's work came at a crucial time in local history. Gull Lake was changing from a ranch and open prairie community into a growing settlement with businesses, homes, schools, churches and municipal institutions. New homes, businesses, schools and churches were beginning to appear, and William Green was part of that growth from the very start.

While others built stores, hotels and businesses, William Green helped shape the community itself. The streets, lots and public spaces that formed early Gull Lake were influenced by the work he was involved in. More than a century later, that influence can still be seen in the community today.

More than a century later, William Green's name remains part of the community he helped establish. Green Street, named in his honour, continues to serve Gull Lake residents and is home to the Autumn House Independent Living Facility.

Through his work as a land agent, townsite planner and early community builder, William Green helped lay the groundwork for the generations that have called Gull Lake home ever since.
