The Town of Gull Lake has been awarded a $40,000 grant from SGI’s Provincial Traffic Safety Fund (see all 62 awarded projects) to build a new, wheelchair- and stroller-accessible sidewalk along the west side of Kreative Kidz daycare. Town Administrator Emella Waiser—who prepared and submitted the application on the town’s behalf—says it will shift drop-off and pickup away from the busier south entrance, creating a safer drop-off and pickup spot for children, parents, and caregivers.
This award is part of a broader $1.54 million funding round announced July 14. Sixty-two road-safety projects in 61 Saskatchewan communities are supported in this round.
Since 2019, SGI’s fund has awarded $14.55 million to 918 local initiatives aimed at combating speeding, impaired and distracted driving, intersection safety, occupant protection, and more. Municipalities and First Nations may apply twice annually for grants ranging from under $1,000 to six-figure awards.
Gull Lake has leveraged this fund before. In June 2021, the town received $47,438 for crosswalk improvements, and in August 2023 secured $9,376 for two radar-speed signs on Rutland Avenue. Town leaders credit these investments with steadily bolstering road safety and pedestrian access.
Work on the Kreative Kidz sidewalk should begin later this summer. Applications for the next grant round are due September 30, 2025; full guidelines and the list of approved projects are available on SGI’s website.
