In small towns, you can hear volunteerism long before you see it—the scrape of skates on the ice, chairs being set up for a fundraiser, and the hum of a community supper coming together. These everyday sounds remind us how much rural life depends on people who quietly give their time.

Across Saskatchewan, National Volunteer Week is our chance to recognize that essential work. This year’s theme, Ignite Volunteerism, shines a light on the power of civic participation and the vital role volunteers play in building resilient, inclusive communities.

Here in rural Saskatchewan, we know how deeply this rings true. Volunteers support programs, maintain facilities, organize events, and help neighbours in ways that often go unseen. Their efforts shape the quality of life in towns across the southwest, including right here in Gull Lake.

Care & Community Support

  • Helping with seniors’ programs and wellness activities

  • Supporting auxiliary groups that assist senior facilities

  • Serving on the Personal Care Home Board and contributing to resident‑focused care

  • Providing steady, behind‑the‑scenes support wherever it’s needed

Community Planning & Local Development

  • Supporting economic development committees and local planning efforts

  • Helping community groups explore new ideas, partnerships, and opportunities

And there are always others who step in where needed — the kind of steady help that doesn’t seek attention but keeps a small town strong.

The Local Impact

Volunteers shape daily life across Gull Lake and the southwest. They support programs, keep facilities running, strengthen local organizations, and help create the events and activities that bring people together. Their steady efforts make it possible for small communities to offer opportunities, services, and experiences far beyond what population alone could sustain.

National Volunteer Week 2026 is a wonderful moment to acknowledge that work—and to thank the people who continue to show up, season after season, to make community possible.
