Last night, the SWT Lyceum Theatre Gull Lake hummed with the excitement of a crowd that’s kept this historic gem alive for over a generation. From the sizzle of hot dogs on the grill to volunteers being presented with awards, every moment echoed the community spirit that began in 1911. Before the feature presentation, a complete history of the theatre was showcased on the big screen—honouring the many people who played a role in its evolution from the original 1911 building to the vibrant theatre we celebrate today.
To the current board members, managers, volunteers, and donors—your commitment throughout this latest chapter of upgrades, challenges, and celebrations has kept the Lyceum Theatre thriving and set the stage for another century of cinematic memories.
My Years with the Lyceum Theatre Gull Lake
I joined the Lyceum Theatre board in 2005 and spent 17 years working alongside dedicated board members, managers, and volunteers. During that time, we replaced old seats with modern theatre seating, restored the auditorium curtains, and made the leap from film to digital projection—instantly transforming picture and sound quality.
I recall our first digital screening in August 2012. As mayor then, I worked with town council to sponsor radio ads announcing our first digital movie. On opening day, neighboring communities filled many seats. That rush marked the start of a lasting trend—a moment of pride that still defines the Lyceum experience today.
To continue drawing in our neighboring community members, we launched a Facebook page and website. Soon folks from across Southwest Saskatchewan were driving in for our warm, small-town welcome to watch a movie in our modern theatre. At regional and provincial conferences and meetings, I’d share this story—people couldn’t believe a town of 1,000 could sustain such a vibrant cinema. And perhaps many towns couldn’t support a movie theatre, but thanks to our community’s efforts, we have one that’s enjoyed by families throughout Southwest Saskatchewan.
Recognizing Volunteers
During the reopening, Volunteer Appreciation Awards were presented to several long-time contributors whose service helped shape the legacy of this theatre. Honourees included:
Deanna Service – 23 years on the Board of Directors
Al & Linda Penner – 35-year volunteers
Norm & Jean White – 35-year volunteers
Phyllis Steele – 23-year volunteer
Blake Campbell – 17 years on the Board of Directors
It was a thoughtful gesture by the current board, and I felt genuinely honored to stand among them. At the same time, I’m mindful of the many other volunteers—past and present—whose quiet dedication may not have been publicly recognized but remains just as integral to the Lyceum’s success. I hope this tribute serves as inspiration to continue celebrating everyone who’s helped keep our theatre alive.
