Community Spotlight: The Heartbeat of Winter at Gull Lake Curling Rink
- Feb 2
- 2 min read

Winter in Gull Lake has its own unique rhythm—and much of it pulses from inside the Gull Lake & District Curling Rink. Each November, this four‑sheet facility comes alive, staying busy through March thanks to dedicated volunteers, league curlers, students, and a community that gathers year after year.
A Century on the Ice
Curling’s roots run deep in Gull Lake. The first four‑sheet rink was built on the northeast corner of Block 51 in the early 1920s. After a brief pause in the late 1930s, when the building even served as grain storage, curling made its comeback in 1946. The rink was rebuilt in the 1950s and, in 1966, replaced with the modern facility we know today—a testament to a century of resilience and passion for the sport.
A Winter Home for Local Curlers
Weekly leagues keep the ice—and spirits—lively all season long:
Men’s League – Mondays
Women’s League – Tuesdays
League nights welcome everyone interested in curling, whether you have years of experience or are just starting out.
More than Just a Rink: Bonspiels, Youth, and Community Programs
The rink offers far more than league play. Each season features:
Multiple bonspiels, drawing curlers from across the region
Junior curling programs, nurturing the next generation of athletes
Gull Lake School Phys. Ed. classes, giving students hands-on experience
Recent seasons have showcased strong youth participation and district-level wins—a testament to the rink’s role in developing young talent and community pride.
Proudly Volunteer-Driven
Behind every successful season are the volunteers who make it all possible:
Off-season plant repairs and upgrades
Equipment improvements
Ongoing maintenance to keep the ice perfect
Their dedication ensures the doors open each fall, welcoming everyone from first-timers to lifelong curlers.
A Place That Brings People Together
From bonspiel weekends and school classes to late-night league games, the curling rink is more than just a sports facility—it’s a gathering place where neighbors meet, friendships form, and a long-standing tradition lives on.
