Based on historical accounts from early RCMP detachment activity
When Gull Lake opened its first RCMP detachment in 1909, the community was so new that most streets were little more than wagon tracks. Even so, the post soon faced its first major test—a cross-border chase involving two men already known in the region for stirring up trouble.
That summer, Nye and Miller—described in early accounts as notorious horse thieves—slipped into the district and made off with two saddle horses from a ranch near Gull Lake. In those days before automobiles, a saddle horse was more than just property; it was vital transportation, a means of livelihood, and often a family’s lifeline. Losing one was like losing your truck, your tools, and your independence all at once.
The pair quickly fled south, crossing into the United States in hopes of outrunning the law. But the newly established detachment at Gull Lake was determined to prove itself. Working with American authorities, the Mounties tracked Nye and Miller across the border, arrested them, and brought them back to face justice.
Both men were sentenced to five years in the Edmonton penitentiary—a clear signal that horse theft on the prairie was no small matter.
For the young community, the case became an early example of the RCMP’s reach and resolve. It underscored how deeply tied daily life was to the land, the weather, and the animals settlers depended on. A stolen horse wasn’t just a crime; it threatened a neighbour’s ability to work, travel, and provide for a family.
More than a century later, the story remains a reminder of Gull Lake’s frontier beginnings—a time when justice travelled by horseback, borders were porous, and a tiny prairie detachment proved it could handle whatever came its way.
