Emergency Preparedness Week: How Southwest Saskatchewan Can Get Ready

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed May 3–9 as Emergency Preparedness Week, a national initiative that encourages Canadians to understand their local risks and take practical steps to be ready for unexpected events. This year’s theme is "Be prepared. Know your risks.” is a reminder that preparedness starts at home, long before an emergency happens.

Across the southwest, the message is especially relevant. Rural communities face a unique mix of risks: fast‑moving grassfires, sudden spring storms, long‑distance travel on major corridors, and the reality that help can take time to arrive when conditions are severe. Building a plan and assembling a 72‑hour kit are simple steps that make a meaningful difference.

Why Preparedness Matters Here

Emergencies in our region often develop quickly. Dry conditions can elevate fire danger. Weather systems can move across the Trans‑Canada and Highway 37 with little warning. Power outages, road closures, and communication disruptions can affect both households and farms.

Being prepared means having what you need to stay safe and self‑sufficient until services stabilize or responders can reach you.

Regional Coordination

The Shaunavon and Gull Lake districts — including their towns and participating RMs — have recently partnered to form the Southwest Regional Emergency Measures Organization, a new structure focused on improving shared planning and regional readiness. While Emergency Preparedness Week is a provincial initiative, the work underway in our region reflects the same goal: stronger coordination, clearer communication, and better preparedness across southwest Saskatchewan.

What Residents Can Do This Week

Emergency Preparedness Week is a good time to:

  • Review or create a family emergency plan

  • Build or update a 72‑hour kit for both home and vehicle

  • Check that emergency contacts are current and accessible

  • Make sure mobile devices can receive SaskAlert notifications

  • Talk with neighbours, especially seniors or those living alone, about their readiness

  • For farms and acreages: consider extra supplies for livestock and keep printed maps on hand in case of network outages

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is sharing templates and resources throughout the week on its Facebook page, with additional materials available on its website.

SaskAlert Test on May 6

A province-wide test of the SaskAlert emergency notification system will take place on:

Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 1:55 p.m.

Residents can expect the test alert to appear on:

  • Television

  • Radio

  • Compatible wireless devices

  • The SaskAlert app

These tests ensure the system works as intended so that, during real emergencies, critical information reaches the public quickly.

Staying Informed

Emergency Preparedness Week is a reminder that readiness is a shared responsibility. Households, farms, businesses, and community groups all play a role in strengthening local resilience.
