What Making a Difference Really Looks Like in a Small Town

Most of what strengthens a small town isn’t grand or complicated. It’s the everyday things people do for each other that make the real impact.

The Quiet Contributor

You might be the person who volunteers to help our public spaces bloom, who straightens the chairs after a hall event, or who shovels a neighbour’s driveway—sometimes showing up with a quad to clear a long stretch of sidewalk. Maybe you’re the one who wheels a neighbour’s garbage bin back to its spot without saying a word. You don’t seek recognition, but these small acts are the grease that keeps the wheels of the town turning.

The Driver

Some volunteers make a difference by helping move new ideas forward. They hear a need, gather support, and help shape programs, spaces, or opportunities that didn’t exist before. A recent example is The Junction — a youth space that became reality because residents saw a need and stepped forward to make it happen. Drivers help turn conversations into action, giving our town room to grow in meaningful ways.

The Backbone Volunteer

These are the people who keep our community spaces alive—the ones who help at the theatre, the hockey and curling rinks, the school, and the care homes. They coach, they clean, they run the clock, they sell tickets, they organize events, they fix equipment, and they make sure the doors stay open. Their steady, hands‑on work is what keeps our facilities running and our programs thriving.

The Talent Sharer & The Connector

Perhaps you’re skilled at social media, photography, or baking. Sharing those talents with a local group, even for one event, can make a massive difference.

Other times, the biggest service is simply being a Connector—showing up to an event and bringing someone new. When you invite a neighbour to a meeting, a theatre night, or any community event, you help strengthen the social fabric of our town.

The Encourager

Some volunteers make a difference simply by lifting others up. A positive word at the coffee shop, a quick message, or even a supportive comment online can help build momentum and keep spirits high. Their encouragement is contagious—and it’s often what keeps other volunteers from burning out.

The Community Booster

Some volunteers contribute through steady, everyday momentum. They share updates, spread the word, encourage neighbours to get involved, and bring new faces to events, meetings, and community projects. They might sit on a board, serve on a committee, or simply be active residents—but what sets them apart is their enthusiasm. Their quiet, consistent support fuels everything from Tourism & Economic Development to the Gull Lake Community Cooperative, helping ideas grow into action.

Small towns thrive because we’re “do‑it‑yourself” communities. We don’t wait for outside help to improve our quality of life—we look to ourselves and each other. Whether you join a group like the Kinettes, serve on a board or committee, support a community project, or simply greet a newcomer, you are helping to build Gull Lake’s future.

Building Communities Together, Every Day

I see these people nearly every day—quietly helping their neighbours and their town. You know who you are, and there are many of you making a positive impact. You don’t seek attention for your deeds, but you deserve a thank‑you for everything you do to make Gull Lake better.

“Building Communities Together” isn’t just a slogan; it’s something that happens every day here in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan.
