A Frosty Morning at the Diner

Gull Lake Diner · Friday Morning · Coffee steaming, boots thawing, and the rink on everyone’s mind.

The diner’s old bell jingled as a gust of frosty air swept in, boots stomping thawing slush onto the cracked linoleum. The smell of fresh coffee and frying bacon hung thick in the air. Earl’s laughter—big as the prairie sky—rolled across the room before anyone had even sat down.

He was already mid-story. “I once curled an entire end backwards and still scored two,” he declared, thumping his mug for emphasis.

Edna didn’t even look up from her muffin. “You tripped over your own broom, Earl. They still talk about it.”

A ripple of chuckles moved around the table as steam curled from the coffee pots.

Talk Turns to the Bonspiel

With the Men’s Bonspiel kicking off today, the table didn’t need much prompting.

Hank folded his arms, eyeing the window. “Warm spells like this make the pebble unpredictable. You’ll throw a perfect rock, and it’ll wander like Earl after a wedding dance.”

Rita practically glowed. “It’s going to be such a fun weekend. The rink feels alive again.”

Mabel wrapped her hands around her mug. “Events like this stitch the town together. Doesn’t matter who wins—it’s the gathering that counts.”

Edna finally looked up. “Bonspiel’s been the heartbeat of winter since before half of you were born. Don’t mess it up.”

Earl leaned back like he was about to tell another tall tale. “I’m available as a spare. I bring enthusiasm and snacks.”

Binder’s voice cut through the chatter, calm as ever. “Let’s hope the weather cooperates.”

A perfect segue—because Hank was already scrolling his phone.

Weather Wisdom from the Spleen

“Speaking of weather,” Hank said, “the pig spleen’s calling for a ‘volatile’ winter. Rain in January, blizzard in February, cold in April, spring in… June.”

Edna sniffed. “The spleen’s been right more often than the fancy apps.”

Hank raised an eyebrow. “It’s not science, Edna. It’s… fat deposits.”

Rita smiled into her cup. “It’s tradition. And it brings people together. I love that.”

Mabel sighed. “If spring’s late, gardeners are going to be cranky. And farmers will have a tight window.”

Earl leaned forward. “I trust the spleen. It predicted my cousin’s wedding would be windy. And it was.”

Binder nodded thoughtfully. “Tradition and data both have their place. What matters is being prepared.”

A chair scraped across the floor as another regular sat down, shaking off the cold. The conversation drifted naturally back toward the bonspiel—and the people who make it possible.

What Local Spending Really Means

Mabel gestured toward the rink poster on the wall. “Look at all the local sponsors. That’s what keeps events like this going.”

Edna tapped the table. “Heritage isn’t just buildings. It’s the people who keep their doors open.”

Hank shrugged. “I buy local when the price makes sense. But I’ll admit — the service is better here.”

Rita brightened. “Shopping local is like cheering for your own team. It feels good.”

Earl launched into a story about buying a toaster from a guy in a parking lot. No one encouraged him to finish.

Binder brought the threads together. “When our businesses thrive, our events thrive. The rink, the pool, the library—they all benefit. Local spending is community investment.”

The diner hummed around them—clinking cups, low conversation, and the steady rhythm of a town waking up.

Closing Thoughts from Coffee Row

Binder: “A strong community is built one choice at a time—how we show up, how we support each other, and how we weather whatever comes our way.”

Edna: “And if the spleen says winter’s wild, well… we’ve handled worse.”
