Why Murals Matter Across Southwest Saskatchewan
“Building Communities Together” — on the north side of the Gull Lake Curling Rink, looking out over Little Green on the Prairie Park. A mural that reflects the work, pride, and cooperation that shape every community across Southwest Saskatchewan. In every Southwest Saskatchewan town, stories are told in unique ways: through museums, landmarks, and the character of main streets at dusk. But murals—especially new large‑scale projects like Shaunavon’s water tower—stand out as so

The Years Gull Lake Became a Town: 1911–1912
A Short History Story Some years leave only faint traces in history. For Gull Lake, 1911 was nearly one of those years, but change was quietly gathering. The records from that year are sparse: routine business, familiar local names, and just two notable decisions—the first grading of Proton Avenue, then the town’s emerging main thoroughfare, and the purchase of a hose cart. Yet beneath that quiet surface, the community was preparing for something larger. Sometime late that ye

Pavement, Planning, and the Long View
You could tell it was going to be one of those mornings on Coffee Row—where history, opinion, and mild exasperation all get poured into the same cup. “Highway 37 didn’t just appear,” Hank said, settling into his chair with the quiet authority of a man who’s driven that stretch in every season Saskatchewan can invent. “It was earned — one petition, one letter, and one stubborn mile at a time.” Mabel had brought in the new write-up about the road’s long fight—the decade-long p

Why Regional Awards Matter: Strengthening Community Pride Across Southwest Saskatchewan
Why Regional Awards Matter: Strengthening Community Pride Across Southwest Saskatchewan In Southwest Saskatchewan, community isn’t just a place you live—it's something you build. Events like the Southline Community Awards , hosted this year in Frontier , help shine a light on that work. As a regional gathering that’s gaining more public visibility, the

The Long Fight to Build Highway 37 (1924–1937)
If you’ve ever driven Highway 37 north toward Cabri or south toward the border, you’re travelling a road that didn’t just “happen.” It was fought for—repeatedly—by a town that understood how vital good roads were to the survival of rural Saskatchewan. The campaign began as early as 1924, when the Gull Lake council formally petitioned the provincial government to build a proper highway north from town. At the time, roads were little more than rutted trails, often impassable in

A 911 call at 5:37 p.m. alerted emergency responders to a garden tractor fire on the lawn at the north end of the parking area at Autumn House. The garden tractor was cutting the lawn when it caught fire. The unit—the only mower used for groundskeeping—was fully involved when firefighters arrived, but the Gull Lake Fire Department extinguished the fire within minutes.
