This Weeks Top Post on Gull Lake Events “Recreation Advisory Committee Awards $7,764 in Grants”

This week's post with the most engagements on our website and social media was, “The Gull Lake Recreation Advisory Committee Awards $7,764 in Grants." The Gull Lake Recreation Advisory Committee is headed by the Recreation Director and currently has six members. The Committee was formed by the Town Council to give residents (both urban and rural) the opportunity to advise Town Council on the recreation needs of the community.

When the committee was formed it adopted the mission statement:

“To contribute to a healthy community by developing programs, facilities and events that encourage participation in quality recreation."

To help them with their mission the RAC developed a community survey and also co-hosted a, “Community Conversation” workshop. The well attended workshop brought members of the community together to discuss the communities recreation needs. The survey and workshop feedback helped the committee establish its recreation advisory priorities.

The Committee has made significant program contributions to the community most notably was the creation of the Kiaskus Walking Trail. The idea of the community walking path came from Town Council’s 2017 to 2021 Strategic Plan. The 5-year plan was developed with input from residents, identified the desire of the community to have a walking path. Thanks to the work and effort of the RAC the path was completed in 2020.

2020 was a challenging year for recreation in every community especially during the lock down early in the pandemic. Thanks to the RAC and Recreation Director residents could participate in some unique activities. The Social Distancing Scavenger Hunt, and the Social Distancing Art Walk that was created by Recreation Director Sara Kuntz were well received by residents during the early part of the pandemic. The RAC also recommended that Council purchase a number of outdoor games that families could sign out and play at home.

The current committee members are: Recreation Director: Sara Kuntz, Peggy Willman, Faye Logan, Richie Bleau, Tim Temoshawsky, Steve Haithwaite, Tyson Migneault (Alternate Dennis Kirk). Thanks Gull Lake Recreation Advisory Committee for the key role, you play in helping provide our community with quality recreation opportunities.
