Southwest Saskatchewan — Weekly Highlights

Long, empty road through vast green fields under a bright blue sky. Peaceful, open landscape evokes a sense of calm and freedom.

March 29 – April 3, 2026

The Southwest moved through a quieter stretch this week, with only a handful of confirmed items landing inside the March 29–April 3 window—but each carried the kind of practical weight people notice when they’re on the road or watching the season shift.

A late‑season system moved through the RM of Gull Lake and Tompkins beginning March 29, dropping a band of heavy, wet snow that briefly complicated travel and added a welcome shot of moisture for fields already waking up for spring. It wasn’t a major storm, but it was enough to slow things down and remind everyone that prairie spring rarely arrives without a few surprises.

Early Tuesday morning, firefighters in the Piapot area responded to a locomotive fire along the rail line. The call came in shortly before 4 a.m., and crews were on scene to manage the incident. No confirmed details were available about injuries, the cause, or the extent of the damage, but the situation drew attention across the southwest given the amount of rail traffic that moves through the region. The locomotive involved was identified through a publicly shared photo.

Maple Creek also made a small governance update this week with the launch of its refreshed municipal website on April 1. The new layout offers clearer navigation and easier access to bylaws, forms, and community information — a quiet improvement, but one that helps residents find what they need without the usual digging.

A documentary project connected to the 1980 CP Rail crew bus crash west of Webb also surfaced this week. A production team working on Steel Gang: The Ties That Bind is planning a visit to the Webb area in mid‑June to meet with former steel gang workers, families, and community members connected to the tragedy. Early outreach suggests the team hopes to gather local stories and ensure the history is told with accuracy and respect. More details will be shared once official information is released.

Around the Southwest This Weekend

April 4–5, 2026

Easter weekend brings a few steady, family‑focused traditions across the region.

In Frontier, the Community Easter Egg Hunt takes place on Saturday, April 4, at 11:00 a.m. at the Frontier Golf Course. Families are encouraged to bring their own basket, and a raffle table will be on site.

Gull Lake marks Easter Sunday with the Community Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt at the Elk’s Hall on April 5 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Hosted by Gull Lake EMS, it’s a familiar, neighborly gathering—a warm breakfast, a festive egg hunt, and the kind of easy community time that fits the season.

Over in Maple Creek, the Cypress Hills Winery is offering an Easter Sunday brunch on April 5, giving residents and visitors a quieter, scenic option to round out the weekend.

A light, steady Easter weekend overall — the kind where families move at their own pace, enjoy a few local traditions, and ease into the first days of April.
