Gull Lake is proud to recognize former resident Anthony Huckabay, Advanced Care Paramedic with the Saskatchewan Health Authority in Melville, for receiving a second bar to his Governor General’s Exemplary Service Medal—a rare and prestigious honour marking 40 years of dedicated, exceptional service to the province of Saskatchewan.
This milestone reflects not only Anthony’s longevity in the field, but his unwavering commitment to excellence, compassion, and leadership in emergency medical services. Over the course of his career, he has earned numerous medals and awards, each a testament to the lives he’s touched and the communities he’s served. The medal was formally presented to Anthony by Her Honour the Honourable Bernadette McIntyre, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in recognition of his exemplary service.
A Career Rooted in Gull Lake
Anthony and I began our careers together in May 1985, when we signed on with the Gull Lake Ambulance Service. At the time, the service was in transition—being taken over by the Gull Lake Union Hospital from the Town of Gull Lake due to a critical shortage of volunteers. The town was at risk of losing its ambulance altogether. Thankfully, Anthony and I, together with several other community members, stepped up, and the service was able to remain in Gull Lake.
Though I haven’t seen Anthony in many years, we knew each other from school, and starting out together with the Gull Lake Ambulance Service in 1985 is a memory I still hold with pride. That moment—when a handful of volunteers helped keep emergency care local—marked the beginning of our careers and showed what community commitment can achieve.
I stayed in Gull Lake and went on to manage the local ambulance service, while Anthony moved on to take a position in Duck Lake. For the past 25 years, Anthony has made his home in the community of Melville, serving as an Advanced Care Paramedic. From those early days to his long career in Melville, his journey has been marked by quiet heroism and steadfast care.
An Honour Well Deserved
It’s remarkable to look back and see how that moment shaped both our paths. What began as a shared commitment to serve our hometown became a springboard for lifelong careers rooted in public service. The Gull Lake Ambulance story is a testament to what can happen when a community rallies—not just to preserve a service, but to invest in its future.
Anthony carried that same spirit with him throughout his career, setting a high standard for EMS professionals across the province. His dedication, humility, and strength have left a lasting impact—not just on patients and colleagues, but on every community he’s served.
Congratulations, Anthony!
Your service continues to inspire.
