The Chinook Regional Library—Gull Lake Branch isn’t just a place for books—it’s a hub of stories, crafts, and connections, thanks to the dedicated staff led by Librarian Carla Orton. Together, they’ve built a welcoming space where residents and visitors alike can learn, create, and feel part of something bigger. And while many people know the branch for its shelves of novels, Carla and her team are quick to point out that there’s so much more waiting to be discovered.
Hidden Treasures at the Library
Carla reminds us that the library offers far more than shelves of novels. Alongside books for all ages, patrons can borrow audiobooks, DVDs, magazines, puzzles, and even board games. The branch also provides computer access, printing services, and a puzzle exchange (no library card required).

Weekly programs include Storytime for toddlers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m., cribbage afternoons on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m., Tech Help Fridays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and the ever-popular Stitch & Chat crafting circle. On the third Thursday of each month, history buffs can dive into the Gull Lake Advance archives, exploring decades of local stories. And for those who prefer digital access, the Libby/Overdrive app opens the door to thousands of e-books, audiobooks, and magazines.
A Gathering Place for All
“The library is no longer the typical quiet place with a ‘shushing’ librarian,” Carla says. “Our branch is a gathering place where everyone is welcome and valued.”
Whether it’s ordering in a book from another branch or helping someone navigate new technology, the library adapts to meet the needs of today’s community.
On Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m., you’ll find cribbage being played, while earlier in the day at 10:30 a.m., toddlers and caregivers gather for Storytime. On Fridays between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., others may be seated at the library computers, surfing the internet, checking email, or getting help with their devices during Tech Help. These weekly rhythms show how the library brings people together in different ways, all under one roof.

A Passion for Local History
Carla’s favorite part of her work is connecting people with their roots. She often receives requests from former residents or genealogists searching the Gull Lake Advance archives or local history books. One highlight was assisting former CBC Regina staff member Florence Hwang in researching the life of George Wong, a beloved restaurant owner in Gull Lake during the 1940s and 50s.
Reading Recommendations
Of course, every library reflects the reading passions of its staff, and Carla is no exception. While she admits it’s hard to choose just one favorite, she gravitates toward nonfiction, local history, cookbooks, and crochet guides. She also enjoys a good thriller, with Stephen King and Diana Gabaldon among her go-to authors.
The Library’s Role in Gull Lake
“Our library is dedicated to providing inclusive and welcoming services that strengthen and sustain lifelong learning,”
Carla explains. Beyond books, the library offers a space where people and ideas come together. The branch is also committed to sustainable funding of its programs and services, with the board and staff eager to collaborate with other nonprofit groups on large fundraising events.
Programs that Inspire
Two of the most popular programs are Storytime and Stitch & Chat, both of which draw strong attendance. Carla herself often leads Storytime, gathering toddlers and caregivers on the library floor for songs, stories, and laughter—a moment captured in the photo below.

Carla is especially proud of a Learn to Crochet class that sparked a wave of new hobbyists in town. Programs like these don’t just fill the calendar—they spark creativity, build friendships, and keep the library buzzing with activity. They show how the library is as much about people and connection as it is about books.
How You Can Get Involved
The Chinook Regional Library—Gull Lake Branch is powered not only by Carla’s leadership but also by the efforts of staff and volunteers who keep programs and services running day to day. Their behind‑the‑scenes work ensures Storytime is ready, Tech Help runs smoothly, and community events feel welcoming.
The branch welcomes new volunteers to help with fundraising, programming, and Storytime preparation. Donations of books, craft supplies, or financial contributions are always appreciated, and residents are encouraged to consider joining the local library board.
Mark Your Calendar
Something exciting is just around the corner: the 50/50 draw winner will be announced on October 10th at 4:00 p.m. Stop by for coffee, tea, and muffins as the community gathers for the big reveal.
Events like this are part of a larger rhythm at the library, where seasonal draws, workshops, and special programs bring people together throughout the year. Whether it’s a holiday craft session, a history day, or a friendly competition, the library finds ways to keep the calendar lively and inclusive.
A Final Word from Carla
“Libraries are the only place people can gather without the expectation of having to spend money,” Carla reflects. “They are trusted community hubs that preserve history, foster civic engagement, and provide safe, welcoming spaces for everyone.”
