Honoring Our Lifesaving Professionals During EMS Week

In emergencies, every second counts. Whether it's a vehicle accident, a medical crisis, or a community emergency, EMS professionals stand ready—trained to provide critical care when it matters most. Across the country and right here in Gull Lake, these dedicated individuals don’t just serve the community—they are part of it.
In small towns, you’re more likely to encounter situations that involve friends, neighbors, or even family members. I know how challenging it is because I have never forgotten those calls—each one demanding not only technical expertise but also an unwavering focus on the patient and the emergency at hand, especially when the situation involves someone you know personally. Having served as a Primary Care Paramedic for 30 years with Gull Lake EMS, I've experienced firsthand the dedication, skill, and strength it takes to serve a community.
Expanding the Role: More Than Just Emergency Response
Our EMS professionals are not only first responders— they are problem-solvers, caregivers, and leaders, stepping up in moments when people need them most. Yet their role extends far beyond urgent medical interventions; they also provide long-term patient support, ensuring continued healthcare access for those who need it.
A perfect example of this expanded care is Gull Lake EMS’s participation in the new Community Paramedicine Program. This initiative allows paramedics to offer ongoing care through home visits, health assessments, medication assistance, wound care, welfare checks, follow-up care, and connections to additional healthcare services. Residents can access these services at no cost, ensuring that those who might struggle to reach traditional healthcare facilities receive essential support in their own homes.
By broadening their focus beyond emergency response, Gull Lake EMS is helping patients not only during crises but also with follow-up care and recovery—bridging the gap between immediate medical intervention and long-term healthcare solutions.
