Documentary Team Planning 2026 Visit Connected to the 1980 CP Rail Crash

A black cross with flowers and a plaque stands on railway tracks. A Canadian flag flies nearby against a vast prairie landscape under blue skies.

A recent post shared in the CP Rail Memorial Facebook group indicates that a documentary team working on Steel Gang: The Ties That Bind is planning a visit to the Webb area on June 16–17, 2026. The project, produced by 47 Filmworks, focuses on the Prairie Region Steel Gang of the 1970s and the lasting bonds formed during their years on the rail. The 1980 CP Rail crew bus crash west of Webb—one of the most significant transportation tragedies in Saskatchewan’s history—is included as part of the film’s broader story.

According to the post, members of the film crew and several former Steel Gang workers intend to spend two days in Webb to conduct interviews with individuals who were affected by the crash or involved in the response. The outreach also notes that the team has already connected with local residents who were present in 1980, helping ensure the story is told with accuracy and respect.

The message mentions the possibility of a community gathering at the Webb Community Hall, along with early discussions about updating or expanding the memorial plaque at the crash site to better reflect the events of that day.

The documentary is listed as “In Development” on the 47 Filmworks website:

The details shared in the post align with the project’s stated focus. While formal announcements from the production team have not yet been released, the information appears consistent with the work underway.

Given the lasting impact of the 1980 crash on families and communities across the southwest, we will continue to follow this story. Any official updates or confirmed details will be shared as they become available.
