A Good‑News Weekend for Gull Lake: Horror Film Festival Brings New Visitors to the Lyceum
Gull Lake had a bright spot this past weekend as the Dead Prairies Horror Film Festival made its debut at the SWT Lyceum Theatre, bringing steady crowds and fresh faces into town. For a community our size, seeing visitors arrive from Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Medicine Hat and across the Prairies is a meaningful win—and worth celebrating.
Devon Oman of Dead Prairies Productions, who organized the event, has been a strong supporter of the Lyceum for years. His regular horror movie fundraisers and special screenings have helped keep the theatre active, but this festival was his biggest contribution yet—a milestone that showed how far that commitment has grown.
The inaugural lineup blended Saskatchewan filmmaking with international creativity, featuring films from Germany, Iran, Israel, Mexico and Portugal. The theatre stayed busy throughout the weekend, and after each screening block, people gathered in the lobby to talk through scenes, compare favourites, and share reactions—the kind of lively atmosphere that reminds us how valuable the Lyceum is as a community space.
One film that stood out for Oman was the German short Summer 94, known for its eerie practical‑effects creature and unique style. But the bigger highlight was watching visitors discover Gull Lake for the first time and leave impressed by the venue, the event, and the welcoming feel of the community.
The festival has been a long‑time goal for Oman, and with support from the Lifeline Fear board, he brought the concept to life—proving that Gull Lake can successfully host niche cultural events that draw regional attention.
The good news continues: the Dead Prairies Horror Film Festival will return on September 25, 2027, once again at the SWT Lyceum Theatre.
