Could We Do That Here? — Gull Lake Open Doors Day
Over the next several weeks, we’ll look at ideas already working in other small towns—practical, creative, or community‑building—and ask a simple question: could they work here in Gull Lake? These aren’t proposals or plans, just possibilities to spark conversation and help us imagine what our town could try next. Across the Prairies, one of the most surprisingly effective community‑building ideas isn’t a festival, a market, or a concert. It’s something much simpler — and much

Coffee Row Chronicle — Heritage, Heroes, and Holiday Cheer
Heritage: Preserving Our Past, Building Our Future Gull Lake Diner, early December. The windows fog with the warmth of conversation and the comforting aroma of fresh coffee. Morning sunlight poured through the frosted windows, catching on the worn linoleum and the cheerful faces gathered at the big table. Mugs steamed in every hand, and the low hum of chatter rose and fell like a gentle tide. This was the heart of town—a place where stories brewed as easily as coffee. Edna ,

How Two Hitchhikers and a Gull Lake Constable Averted Highway Tragedy
On a cool Friday evening in September 1968—a Friday the 13th, no less—a routine patrol on Highway 1 turned into one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the Gull Lake RCMP detachment. Two 18‑year‑olds from Waterloo, Ontario, Dennis Bonn and Brian McLennan, were hitchhiking west toward British Columbia. Near Whitewood, a new Mercury Cougar pulled over. The driver introduced himself only as “Knobby,” said he was heading for Calgary, and offered them a ride. He was fri

What Holds a Small Town Together Isn’t Viral Noise—It's Us
A viral video and a wave of outside commentary can travel far faster than the truth, and this week the Lyceum Theatre found itself at the centre of a story that doesn’t reflect who we are or how we treat one another. In that video, the theatre, its volunteers, and several local residents are spoken about in ways that are unfair, inaccurate, and unworthy of the place we call home. Gull Lake isn’t perfect—no community is—but we are not a town where people are reduced to insults
