Town Halls, Tall Ladders, and the Art of Showing Up

Some weeks, the town’s pulse beats at the council — other weeks, it’s out on the street with a spray can.
The Hook — Anchored in Real News
Word reached the Round Table early: a joint town hall on April 21 at 7:00 PM at the Elks Hall will walk residents through potential upgrades to the Gull Lake Health Centre’s lab and X‑ray equipment.
The session continues the regional conversation that began with the January 14, 2026 SHA update—and the Town’s $25,000 commitment in June 2024 toward the planned X-ray upgrade.
The Friction—Earl & Edna Stir the Pot
Earl tapped the meeting notice Mabel had set beside the creamers. “Upgrades, next steps, regional partners… sounds important. But if I walk out with more acronyms than answers, I’m demanding a refund on my free cookie.”
Edna flipped open her For Posterity notebook—already colour‑coded. “We committed $25,000 in June 2024. This isn’t a fresh start — just the next step. And with the R.M.s of Gull Lake, Webb, and Carmichael as partners, I expect straight talk, not fog. Stone’s already grumbling about something, I’m sure.”
Earl leaned in. “Here’s my question: are we talking months or years before anything actually changes?”
Edna added, “And will we see the full cost breakdown — not just the highlights?”
Hank settled into his chair — the only one he’ll sit in. “My question’s this: what’s the timeline once all three R.M.s and the Town put their pieces on the table? Good plans move faster when everyone’s rowing together.”
Just then, The Librarian drifted past, paused, and said—without looking up: “The SHA update was January fourteenth, twenty‑twenty‑six.” Then she vanished like a factual prairie ghost.
Earl blinked. “…I stand corrected. And slightly afraid.”
Meanwhile, Out on Rutland Avenue…
But outside the council chambers, the town’s canvas was changing too.
Mid‑Story Spark — A Ladder, a Breeze, and Muffins
The door swung open and Rita breezed in, cheeks pink from the wind and carrying a bakery box. “Mural muffins!” she announced. “Black‑and‑white swirl — inspired by the new mural going up on the Fourplex.”
Earl perked up. “Finally, art I can understand. Big, bold, and not asking me to interpret my feelings.”
Rita ignored him with whimsical precision. “You should’ve seen Andrew yesterday — halfway up a ladder, spray cans going steady. The girl, the florals… it’s all about slowing down and appreciating what’s around us. He said he wanted something people could enjoy as they drive through—a reminder to "stop and smell the flowers."
Edna nodded despite herself. “At least it’s not another beige wall.”
Perspective Shift — Mabel & Rita Reframe the Moment
Mabel refilled cups—the Round Table’s universal reset button. “Health care, murals... they’re both signs of a community investing in itself. One keeps us well. The other reminds us who we are.”
Rita added, “And it’s a gift. His first mural of the year—for us. That says something.”
Duet Closer — Binder Arrives (Seven Minutes Late)
Mayor Binder stepped in—exactly seven minutes after everyone else—and hung his hat on the same hook as always. “Upgrading diagnostic equipment is about protecting local access,” he said. “And public art is about showing the world we’re still building.”
Earl leaned back with a grin. “Well, Binder, if you can show the receipts on both, I’ll bring the muffins next week.”
