Obituary: Steven Vernon Small

1950 – 2026

With deep sadness, the family announces the passing of Steven Vernon Small, who left this world peacefully on September 21, 2026, surrounded by loved ones, after a difficult journey with dementia. His life was defined by kindness, curiosity, and a steadfast commitment to learning, community, and family.

Life & Legacy

Born in Gull Lake on March 9, 1950, Steve grew up between town and the family farm, attending Gull Lake School and forming the early friendships and experiences that shaped his character. He went on to earn a Master of Education from the University of Saskatchewan, beginning his teaching career at the Radius Tutoring Project and spending several years in Saskatoon and Vancouver. During this time, he met Shannon Hegglin of Regina, the love of his life. They married in 1978 and returned to Gull Lake to build their future together, taking over the farm in the Clairbank community and raising their family there.

Although farming was central to Steve’s working life, education was his calling. He taught throughout the winter months, served on school and college boards, and in 1993 founded Maverick School in Swift Current—a place where he taught, mentored, and inspired students for 17 years. His belief in second chances, individualized learning, and meeting students where they were became the foundation of Maverick’s identity.

Beyond work, Steve poured his energy into community life. He served on the United Church board, taught youth groups, curled, played and coached baseball, announced hockey and football games, and proudly supported his children in their athletic and musical pursuits. His warmth, humour, and genuine interest in people made him a natural connector—someone who lifted others simply by being present.

Family

Steve was predeceased by his parents, Vern and Nettie Small, and his parents‑in‑law, Al and Mildred Hegglin.

He is survived by his loving wife Shannon; his children: Cody (Kim), Shane (Michael), and Tessa (Drew); his grandchildren: Parker, Pacey, Piper, and Pressley; his siblings: Doug (Brenda), Penny (Wayne), Sherry (Colin), and Fred (Janet); his brothers‑in‑law: Kent (Karen) and Scott (Carol); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember him with affection and gratitude.

Service Details

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Innovation Plex Social Hall in Swift Current.

Donations & Memorials

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maverick School, honouring Steve’s lifelong dedication to education and student success.
