Little Green on the Prairie Park: Honoring Our Past, Forging Our Future

Playground featuring vibrant green slides at Little Green on the Prairie Park, set in a lush park landscape with benches and trees in the background under a clear blue sky. A peaceful and inviting scene.

I remember when the block now home to Little Green on the Prairie Park was mostly empty—just the curling rink to the south and an older home on the northwest corner. Then came an idea that nearly everyone embraced. According to the Centennial Chronicles, a door-to-door survey revealed that 97% of residents supported creating a park. That overwhelming backing turned a vacant lot into a thriving community space.

Little Green on the Prairie Park is a living tribute to Gull Lake’s roots—honouring our past, forging our future. Built on the community spirit that founded our town, the park stands as a testament to our history and a guiding light for tomorrow. By reclaiming a historic block—once marked only by a curling rink and an old home—the park explicitly honors our past, transforming a forgotten corner into a vibrant space that reflects the enduring values which built Gull Lake

That same spirit drives our downtown revitalization. The Gull Lake Property Development Cooperative is leading the charge in restoring the historic pharmacy building. Built in 1913, this building once hosted several drug stores, as noted in the Centennial Chronicles. I remember being in the last pharmacy before it closed and was later repurposed as a clothing shop—a testament to its long and varied legacy. Although it has been vacant for many years, the cooperative is currently focused on preserving and revitalizing the Old Pharmacy, ensuring sustainable economic activity for future generations. This restoration is not merely about preserving history; it’s about creating new opportunities and breathing fresh life into our town, embodying the spirit of honoring our past and forging our future.

A powerful symbol of our collective commitment stands proudly within the park—the mural on the north side of the Gull Lake Curling Rink. With its colorful artwork and the bold text “Building Communities Together,” the mural encapsulates our town's determination, teamwork, and belief in progress. Just as the park emerged through the spirit of community, our downtown revitalization is a living testament to how we continue honoring our past, forging our future.

As we look back on our shared history and move forward, I invite every resident to reflect on their role in Gull Lake’s journey. Our past and our future are deeply connected, and together, we continue shaping our town.
