How Gull Lake’s Hospital Endured the Hardest Years of the 1930s

When Gull Lake’s new hospital opened on August 13, 1930, it stepped into a decade marked by uncertainty. The board had appointed the staff earlier that summer, and the opening team included Mrs. Kathy Bushell, Margaret Maloney, and Miss Rogers. With the building ready and a full staff in place, the hospital quickly became part of the community’s daily life.

The years that followed were lean ones. Budgets tightened, and wages were reduced more than once as the Depression wore on. Even so, the hospital kept going. The board met regularly, stretched what resources it had, and managed to keep the doors open at a time when many rural institutions were struggling.

Community support made a real difference. The Homemakers Club and Hospital Aid supplied linens, equipment, and food, helping the hospital make the most of limited means. Their steady contributions ensured the hospital could continue serving families across the district.

Stability also came from the people who worked there. Doctors and nurses who served through the 1930s and into the 1940s—including Dr. Baines, Dr. McCue, Dr. Matheson, Mrs. Kathy Bushell, Margaret Maloney, and Miss Rogers—provided continuity during years when consistency was hard to find. Their long service helped anchor the hospital through the decade.

By the end of the 1930s, the hospital had come through one of the most challenging periods in its history. It stayed open, it stayed active, and it stayed rooted in the community—a reflection of steady leadership, dedicated staff, and the ongoing support of local residents.
