In Gull Lake stands a building that is more than brick and mortar—it’s a cornerstone in the story of our community. For generations, Gull Lake School has been the place where students learn, families gather, and traditions are carried forward.
From kindergarten through graduation, Gull Lake School shapes not only individuals but the character of our town. It is a place of learning and belonging, where values of respect, responsibility, and pride are lived out every day.
That spirit shows up in countless ways—especially in the Grade 4 students who visited Town Hall annually during my time as mayor, eager to ask thoughtful questions and learn how their community works.
Tradition and Quality Education
While the building has changed, the school’s role as a steady presence in Gull Lake has endured for generations. Families trace their roots through its halls, and teachers pass down lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.
Through Chinook School Division, Gull Lake School continues to evolve—blending tradition with a commitment to quality education that prepares students for the future.
Each fall, Saskatchewan marks Education Week. This year’s theme, “Seeds of Learning, Roots to Success,” highlights how education builds lifelong possibilities. At Gull Lake School, that theme is lived out daily through classrooms, activities, and community connections.
Saskatchewan also recognizes School Bus Driver Appreciation Day around the same time—a reminder of the vital role drivers play in ensuring students arrive safely, day after day.
The People Who Make It Work
Behind every lesson and event are the teachers, support staff, and volunteers who make Gull Lake School a place of care and connection.
Principal Adele Kirwan, in her welcome message, writes:
“Our culture is based on the school values of respect, responsibility, and pride. These values are embedded in all that we do at Gull Lake School.”
From the classroom to the playground, from the front doors to the bus routes, the staff and volunteers provide the steady support that keeps each school day running smoothly. Their work often goes unseen, but its impact is felt in every student’s success and every safe arrival.
Community in Action
The School Community Council (SCC) volunteers give their time and energy to enrich student life and support school goals. Their efforts—whether organizing events, improving spaces, or creating moments of connection—make a lasting difference in the daily experience of students and families.
Last school year, their focus on Wellness for the School Community led to meaningful projects: completing the middle years outdoor space, hosting a family dance, providing a turkey lunch at Christmas, organizing a family activity night, and coordinating the annual art show.
These contributions brought families together, supported student wellbeing, and strengthened the school’s role as a welcoming, vibrant cornerstone of Gull Lake.
A Hub of Spirit and Pride
From hot lunch days to families gathering under the Friday night lights to cheer on the Gull Lake Lions football team, the school is a hub of community spirit. When the Lions take the field, it’s more than a game—it’s a hometown tradition that unites generations. Some fans pack the stands, while others spread out along the sidelines, creating a ring of support that surrounds the team and shows the pride our community carries onto the field.
Why It Matters
Every day, Gull Lake School helps shape the future of our community. Students gain not only knowledge but also the values and skills that prepare them to become tomorrow’s leaders, volunteers, and neighbors.
The school anchors community life: it’s where families gather, where traditions are passed down, and where civic curiosity takes root. From family dances and turkey lunches to art shows and sports nights, the school creates spaces where parents, grandparents, and children come together, strengthening bonds across generations.
During my time as mayor, one of the highlights each year was meeting with the Grade 4 students at Town Hall to answer their questions about municipal government. Their curiosity and genuine interest in how our town works was a reminder of how the school helps raise engaged, informed citizens who care about their community.
By educating our students and connecting families through shared events and celebrations, Gull Lake School plays an irreplaceable role in sustaining the strength, pride, and enduring presence of our community.
Closing Thought
The future of our community takes shape within the classrooms of Gull Lake School.
Here, students gain the knowledge, values, and confidence that prepare them to become tomorrow’s leaders and neighbors. Just as importantly, the school’s commitment to quality education ensures that every lesson builds both individual potential and community strength.
Beyond its walls, the school anchors community life, bringing families together through events, celebrations, and shared pride.
As we celebrate Education Week and honor the staff, volunteers, and supporters who make it all possible, let’s remember that Gull Lake School is more than an institution of learning—it is a cornerstone of our community’s strength, enduring presence, and future.
